Work-Study Program (WSP)

 

What is the Work-Study Program?

The University of Ottawa's Work-Study Program gives students a chance to get a part-time job on campus. Thanks to this program, you can earn extra money and get valuable work experience during your studies. If you do not have sufficient funds to pay all of your education-related costs, you may be eligible to participate in the program.

 

How do I apply for the Work-Study Program?

How to apply for the WSP (part-time) and the summer employment program (full-time):

  • Complete the Work-Study application form through the Work-Study (WS) Navigator, available through the uoZone portal. If you do not qualify for government financial assistance, you will need to complete a 12-month student budget form.
  • Once you are approved for the program, you can then post your résumé (through the WS Navigator) and search for job positions to be filled.
  • The employers will contact you to arrange an interview.
  • Before starting your new job, you must sign an employment contract supplied by your new employer.

     

What are the criteria to qualify for the Work-Study Program?

The following requirements must be met to be eligible for the program:

  • You must qualify for government financial assistance for the current academic year or demonstrate financial need by completing a 12-month budget statement (availabe through the WS Navigator).
  • You must remain registered in a minimum of nine credits per session at the undergraduate level (six credits per session for students with disabilities) or you must be registered full-time at the graduate level for a complete session and/or academic year.
  • You must maintain a satisfactory academic standing.

     

Can I work full-time?

Regular students can work full-time only for the summer period. When working full-time on campus, you can earn up to $6,000 for a maximum period of 18 weeks. The number of full-time student workers varies based on the availability of funds.

Requirements:

  • You must have received government financial assistance during the previous academic year or demonstrate financial need by completing a 12-month budget statement (available through the WS Navigator).
  • You must remain registered in a minimum of nine credits during the previous winter session (six credits for students with disability) or full-time at the graduate level for a complete session and/or academic year.
  • You must return to the University of Ottawa in the following fall semester with a minimum of nine credits for undergraduate students or full-time for graduate students.
  • You must maintain a satisfactory academic standing.

     

What if I'm a co-op student?

Requirements:

  • You must have received government financial assistance during the current academic year or demonstrate a financial need by completing a 12-month budget statement (available through the WS Navigator).
  • You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have protected person status.
  • You must be registered in a minimum of nine credits for the session preceding your work period.
  • You must be registered full-time in the session previous to your work period, and register in a minimum of nine credits in the session following your work period.
  • You must maintain a satisfactory academic standing.

NOTE: Co-op students who wish to enroll in the Work-Study Program for one of their co-op work terms must submit their application directly to the Co-operative Education Program Office, 100 Thomas More Street, 4th Floor, Ottawa, ON K1N 6N5.

 

I am finishing my bachelor’s degree OR I am a graduate student: am I eligible for the summer WSP and under which conditions?

Yes, you are eligible for the summer WSP if you meet the general WSP requirements AND one of the following conditions:

  • If you are finishing your bachelor’s degree: you must send an e-mail (loansandawards@uottawa.ca) to the Financial Aid and Awards Service attesting on honour your intention to register in the fall following your work-period, for a minimum of 9 credits at the undergraduate level OR full-time at the graduate level.
  • If you are a graduate student : you must send an e-mail (loansandawards@uottawa.ca) to the Financial Aid and Awards Service attesting on honour your intention to register full-time in the fall following your work-period. 

 

I am an international student. Am I allowed to participate in the WS program?
