Bursaries
Financial Aid Bursary
This bursary program was created because the University recognizes that some students may need financial assistance during their studies. As a student you (as well as your parents or spouse) are expected to help cover the cost of your education. The value of individual awards will depend on the level of financial assistance required and on the availability of funds. The amounts awarded will first be applied to your student debt towards the University of Ottawa.
In order to qualify for a financial aid bursary, you must meet the following requirements:
Spring/Summer 2013
- Be registered to a minimum of 9 credits at the undergraduate level (6 credits for student with a permanent disability) or be registered full-time at the graduate level during the 2013 Spring/Summer session;
- Receive government financial aid for the Summer 2013 session (please verify your 2012-13 OSAP application to confirm the start and end dates; you may have already been assessed until the end of August 2013);
- Contribute financially towards your studies, as well as a contribution from parents or spouse, if applicable;
- Complete the application form (in Online Scholarships and Bursaries), as well as the Financial Questionnaire before the set deadline. Online Scholarships and Bursaries and the Financial Questionnaire are both available through the uoZone portal;
- Demonstrate financial need
- Maintain a satisfactory academic standing.
Fall/Winter 2013-2014
- Be registered at the University of Ottawa during the 2013-2014 academic year;
- Be eligible to receive governmental financial aid (issued through your provincial or territorial student financial assistance such as OSAP, AFE, etc.)*, and have claimed your funds;
- Contribute financially towards your studies, as well as a contribution from parents or spouse, if applicable;
- Complete the application form (in Online Scholarships and Bursaries), as well as the Financial Questionnaire before the set deadline. Online Scholarships and Bursaries and the Financial Questionnaire are both available through the uoZone portal;
- Demonstrate financial need;
- Maintain a satisfactory academic standing.
The Financial Aid Bursary is available during the following periods of time:

First Generation Student Bursary
The First Generation Student Bursary was created by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in 2006. The purpose of this bursary is to enable students to become the first member of their family to attend a post-secondary institution.
First Generation students are those whose father and mother did not complete post-secondary education. For the purposes of this definition, "father" refers to father, stepfather, legal guardian or official sponsor; "mother" refers to mother, stepmother, legal guardian or official sponsor.
In order to qualify for the First Generation Student Bursary, you must meet the following requirements:
- Have Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency or Protected person status;
- Meet the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) provincial residency requirements;
- Be registered at the University of Ottawa during the 2013-2014 academic year, in an undergraduate program*;
- Complete the application form available in Online Scholarships and Bursaries before the set deadline.
- Demonstrate financial need
- Maintain a satisfactory academic standing.
*Students registered in Graduate and Second entry programs (such as Medicine, Education, Law (Civil & Common)) are not eligible for this bursary.

Aboriginal Postsecondary Education and Training Bursary
Funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities of Ontario, this Bursary aims to support Aboriginal students who demonstrate financial need access postsecondary education and training.
In order to qualify for the Aboriginal Postsecondary Education and Training Bursary, you must meet the following requirements:
- Have Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency or Protected person status;
- Meet the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) provincial residency requirements;
- Be registered at the University of Ottawa during the 2013-2014 academic year, in a Regular Program, on a part time or full time basis;
- Self-identify as an Aboriginal student;
- Demonstrate financial need;
- Complete the application form available in Online Scholarships and Bursaries before the set deadline.
Form available in Online Scholarships and Bursaries 4 months before the deadline.
Value: Minimum $1,000.
Deadline: November 15 2013.
Education bursaries (Common Law and Medicine students)
The Education bursary is given by the University to students who demonstrate financial need and who meet the eligibility criteria associated with one of the following categories: Faculty of Law, Common Law Section or Faculty of Medicine.
This bursary is offered for a maximum period of 3 years for the Common Law Program and 4 years for the MD Program. Students registered to joint programs must be paying their tuition fees to the University of Ottawa in order to receive this bursary. Students must maintain their full time registration at all times during the regular Academic year. Temporary interruption of the studies or registration part-time or as a special student will lead to the bursary being revoked.
Students at the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section
Eligibility criteria
- Be registered for full-time studies in the Faculty of Law Common Law Section
- Have Canadian citizenship, permanent-residency or protected-person status
- Be eligible for and have claimed government financial aid (issued through your provincial or territorial student financial assistance such as OSAP, AFE, etc.)*.
Number of bursaries : Variable
Value :
- A 2,000$ bursary is granted to eligible full-time students who are admitted for the first time to the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, who register for the fall and winter sessions (September to April) and who receive financial aid from their province of origin.
- A 1,500$ bursary is granted to eligible full-time returning students who register in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, for the fall and winter sessions (September to April) and who receive financial aid from their province of origin.
Application form : No application is required; the bursary will be credited to your student account (in 2 installments), within 4 weeks following the disbursement of your government financial aid.

Students at the Faculty of Medicine
Eligibility criteria
- Register full time in the Faculty of Medicine
- Have Canadian citizenship, permanent-residency or protected-person status
- Be eligible for and have claimed government financial aid (issued through your provincial or territorial student financial assistance such as OSAP, AFE, etc.)*

- A 4,500$ bursary is granted to eligible full-time students who are admitted for the first time to the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine for the fall and winter sessions (September to April) and who receive financial aid from their province of origin.
- A 2,000$ bursary is granted to eligible full-time returning students who register for the fall and winter sessions (September to April) at the Faculty of Medicine and who receive financial aid from their province of origin.
Application form : No application is required; the bursary will be credited to your student account (in 2 installments), within 4 weeks following the disbursement of your government financial aid.

OSOTF, OTSS or private donors' bursaries
The University of Ottawa also distributes several bursaries from the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF), the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) or from private. Please visit Online Scholarships and Bursaries for the list of all of these bursaries you are eligible for.
